Some days suck, there is no way to deny it or avoid it.
Despite your best intentions, something blocks you, frustrates you, or demoralizes you.
One thing I have learned is that there is one thing worse than having a shitty day. And that is pretending that you’re feeling good on a shitty day.
Most of my life I was told to hold my chin up and roll with the punches. To keep going no matter what and act is if I felt like a million bucks. Maybe there are some people who can hide their emotions, but I am not one of them.
A far better strategy – I have learned – is that if you feel shitty, then just feel shitty. Experience how it feels, and let the emotion flow through you. The shitty feelings pass faster if you admit to them.
What I have noticed is that whenever I try and fake a positive emotion over the top of a negative feeling, that it makes me feel somehow weaker. My energy is fractured. I am in this awkward emotional void where nothing is being resolved or released.
So. When you feel shitty, feel shitty.
Own it. Revel in it.
Because soon it will pass.
When I am suggesting that you feel shitty, I am not saying you need to treat other people poorly. Your shitty feelings don’t give you permission to transfer them to others. You can feel them but still treat other people well.
It also gives you no reason to quit. The way you feel has no bearing on the outcome you are seeking. If you are striving for a result, then shitty times are headed your way. Embrace them.
So if you’re reading this and you feel shitty, then embrace the shittiness. Feel like crap, but treat people well, keep doing what you need to do.
Shitty is temporary. You are going all the way.
I couldn’t agree more! Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome Kristian, I appreciate your comments and support of me 🙂 – DMS
Thank you for this. I felt super stressed and shitty yesterday morning, but I owned it, and … it passed. And it passed quicker than I expected!
Laura, I am so glad it helped. As you can imagine, I wrote this blog earlier this week during a shitty time, and it definitely helps to ‘sit in the storm’ rather than pretend it’s not happening. So glad it helped you too 🙂 – DMS
I really appreciated it! I like that – Sitting in the storm. I’ll have to remember that!
